A Tasty Rainbow of Phytonutrients

Recipe Notes

You can substitute different ingredients to make your rainbow of color. There are no rules - just have fun. However, to minimize blood sugar spikes I recommend making sure that you have protein, fat, and or fiber included. Here are my suggestions to choose from:

  • Red – Strawberries, raspberries, sweet red bell pepper, beet juice
  • Orange – Orange, mango, sweet orange bell pepper, carrot juice, turmeric
  • Yellow – Pineapple, sweet yellow bell pepper, ginger
  • Green – Spinach (blends well with berries), green apple, matcha green tea powder
  • Blue/Purple – Blueberries, blackberries, acai
  • White/Tan/Brown – Ground flaxseeds/chia seeds/hemp seeds, plant-based protein powder
  • Water or dairy-alternative (we like unsweetened almond milk)

Rainbow Smoothie Ingredients

For today's smoothie I did: strawberries (I keep the stems on as they blend in my vitamix), orange (peeled), mango, pineapple, baby spinach leaves fresh from the garden, matcha green tea powder, blueberries, ground flaxseeds and a plant-based protein powder.

    Dr. Porter, I wanted to connect with you because I have been to many Chopra retreats, my latest being at Asilomar last fall. I did not have the privilege of knowing David Simon but saw your quote about wisdom being in the whole food. I am currently in treatment for ovarian cancer am doing my best to starve the cancer with low glycemic foods, exercise, blocking glutamine pathways with IV vitamin C as well as Claritin, doxycycline and metformin. May husband is a family doctor and is approving of these meds which were recommended by Dr. Louis Malinow, an MDVIP physician whom we know. I am interested in whatyou might suggest with regard to my best shot at starving this particular cancer. I mediate twice daily and take yoga every day. Warmest regards,

      Hi Caryn. Thank you for reaching out. I’m sorry to hear that you are dealing with ovarian cancer. Definitely there is an approach to treat cancer from a metabolic standpoint which is sounds like you are doing. For hormonally related cancers I also find it useful to look at the metabolic pathways of these hormones and optimize those through food and nutrients. And the other approaches are to keep inflammation down and optimize the immune response. For nutritional coaching such as this, I will be launching a virtual practice in the next couple of weeks.
